Signs You May Have A Slab Leak
Although there are other causes, cracks in your walls and floors, could be a sign of a possible slab leak. If undetected and not repaired quickly, water running under the floor can cause the ground to be unstable, creating a void, or shifting the foundation and causing the cracks. Walk around your home and check floors for any spots that seem to stay damp for no particular reason. Also check for cracked tiles, and bubbles in linoleum.
Another sign may be the sound of water running, where there should be none. Check to see if any faucets have been left open. If not, it is likely you have a slab leak. A strong musty or mildew odor can be another indicator. You may notice this around sinks, tubs, and the dish washer, but it can occur elsewhere. Also, mold can be seen around baseboards and under carpets. If carpets are damp, you should check for mildew or mold. Bacteria and mold can be a health hazard.
A warm or hot spot on the floor may be a sign of a hot water leak. This can be especially damaging if the pipes burst, as the hot water will be accompanied by steam. If you notice pets favoring a certain spot on the floor, check to see if it’s warm. Stoppage or backup of toilets, sinks and showers, is another indicator.
Check your water bill. If it is unusually high, there may be a slab leak. If you water your lawn or have a swimming pool, your bill will be higher during the warmer months. However, you should probably have a look at your meter if it is higher than normal. Also, if you find yourself refilling your in ground swimming pool more often than you normally would, the culprit is likely to be a slab leak.
